Aesthetics and Male Grooming expert Stephen Handisides is a regular on TV screens across the UK and USA appearing on ITV, This Morning, GMTV, Lorraine, OK!TV, Sky TV and BBC radio. As we head into the start of 2017, in this issue, we asked Stephen, for the modern man’s guide to dating.
Over my years in the industry I have been lucky enough to meet beautiful, intellectually stimulating and witty women from all around the world. As a result, I am often asked in interviews for a man’s perspective on dating and what it is that women want? So, if this is your year to meet the lady of your dreams, then here are my top tips, to help you navigate the dating minefield.
Pay attention and listen. When meeting a woman for the first time, look her in the eye, smile, ask questions and really listen. When other people join the conversation, introduce her by name, it shows you’ve been paying attention. She may not be your future partner, but every person you meet has something interesting to say.
Make an effort. On a date, I can almost guarantee that she will have put thought into looking nice, so you should to! Make an effort with your appearance, dress well, have a shave and brush your teeth. If you are picking her up, clean out your car. Don’t smoke and don’t drink too much.
Be yourself. Don’t pretend to be an ex-military special forces hero if you left Army cadets when you were 15! Be yourself and be proud of who you are. If she doesn’t like who you are, then she isn’t worth it.
Games are for children, not gentlemen. Don’t play games in a relationship, if you want to call, call. If you don’t think she is right for you, in the politest way, let her down gently. Don’t date multiple woman at the same time and think you’ll meet ‘The One’. Invest in each relationship. If it’s not right, don’t just settle, be honest and move on.
Don’t talk about your Ex. Especially not on a first date. Don’t talk negatively about your ex-girlfriends. It will just make you look bad.
Put down the phone. Turn your phone off, or at least put it on silent and in your pocket when on a date. It can all wait, give her the attention she deserves. Also, note to self, taking selfies and foodporn Instagram pictures on a date, just isn’t cool.
Respect her and be a gentleman. Treat a lady with respect. Don’t be late. Offer to pay on the first date. Walk her to her car, open the car door and make sure she gets home safe. Be a gentleman.
She’s just not that into you. If she doesn’t text back, or answer your calls, even if you thought the date went really well, she is just not that into you. Don’t dwell on it, or analyse what you did wrong. Delete her number and move on.
Communicate. At the beginning of a relationship, or after 10 years of marriage. Communication is the key. Always be honest and talk things through. Arguments aren’t always bad; they can be a really good way to sort out differences, as long as you can talk it through and resolve it. Compromise and don’t be stubborn, relationships are give and take. And as the age old saying goes ‘Never go to bed on an argument’.
Don’t take her for granted. Take notice, pay her a compliment, take her somewhere special. Remember her birthday and anniversaries. You don’t have to spend a fortune on extravagant gifts, but the small thoughtful gestures are worth their weight in gold.
If she is a keeper. ‘The One’ is hard to find and some of us spend a lifetime looking! If you feel that you have met that special someone, put in the hard yards. Treat her like a princess and make her feel special. A real connection with someone, is hard to find and really special, hold onto it.
Most importantly, have fun! Dating is fun, exciting and a great way to meet new people. Get out there, go on lots of dates and have fun.
